Alexander William Sommers, Sr., 80, of Summit Hill, passed away February 21, 2018 in St. Luke's Hospital, Coaldale, PA, with his loving family by his side.
He was the loving husband of wife Elizabeth "Liz" (Matta) Sommers for 57 years.
Born in Coaldale, PA on October 26, 1937, he was the son of the late Pasquale Samuele and Catherine "Katie" (Kane) Sommers.
Alexander was a graduate of Summit Hill High School and later graduated from Bethlehem Business School, Inc.
He was an active member of St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church of the Panther Valley, a past president of the Jaycees, a member of the Summit Hill American Legion, Post 316, a former member of the Summit Hill St. Gabriel's Italian Club, a 4th degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus and also served on the Summit Hill town council.
Alexander also proudly served our country in the United States Naval Reserves.
Employed for over 35 years at Coaldale State Hospital, he held the title of Assistant Financial Administrator.
Alexander loved ceramics. He also loved to fish and hunt.
Alexander is survived by his loving wife Elizabeth "Liz" Sommers, a daughter Patricia "Patsy" Sommers and her wife Joann Groark of Skippack Township, and two sons; Alexander William Sommers, Jr. of Franklin, Wisconsin and Jeremy Keith Sommers and his fiancé JoAnne Turner of Summit Hill.
Also surviving is his brother, William Sommers, and his companion Kay Jennings of Tamaqua.
Alexander was preceded in death by his grandson Nicholas A. Allesch who passed away May 2, 2011. He is also preceded by his brothers; Thomas, John, Louis, Patrick, James and Edward and his sisters: Clara Polakovich, Margaret Stashluk, Rose York and Catherine Sommers.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 12 PM in St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church of the Panther Valley, 462 West Ludlow St, Summit Hill, PA 18250.
A viewing will be held Monday from 10:00 am - 12 pm in St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church of the Panther Valley, 462 West Ludlow St, Summit Hill, PA 18250. A Legion service will be held at 11:30 am.
