Larry Nester Obituary

Larry H. Nester, of 2000 Cambridge Avenue, Wyomissing (The Highlands), passed away at age 84 on Monday, March 19, 2018.

 

Born in Reading, he was the son of the late Leon L. and Arlene M. (Heinly) Nester.

 

Larry was employed for nearly 35 years as a member of the Information Systems staff by the former Western Electric Company and AT&T (now Lucent Technologies, Inc.). He retired in 1994.

 

He was a 1953 graduate of Muhlenberg High School, and a 1957 graduate of Albright College, where he received a B.S. in Economics and served on numerous alumni and fraternity reunion committees.

 

Larry served in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1959 as an instructor in the Field Artillery Missile Training Command. He was an Elder at Good Shepherd United Church of Christ, Tuckerton, where he served as President of the Church Council on three separate occasions.

Larry volunteered with numerous community organizations including the Muhlenberg Crime Watch, Laurel Run Pool and Muhlenberg Volunteer Home Care. He also served on the Board of the Daniel Boone Coin Club, the Advisory Board of the Muhlenberg School District Education Foundation, and was a past president of the Muhlenberg Township Athletic Association.

 

Larry was a devoted member of the Muhlenberg Lions Club for 41 years, serving as President in 1982-83 and on numerous other committees. He was named Lion of the Year in 1992 and 1999 and received the Melvin Jones Fellow Award in 2001.

 

He is survived by his wife Margaret R. (Brookes) Nester, married 56 years. He is also survived by a son, Dr. Brian A. Nester and wife Dr. Tina Pippis-Nester of Center Valley, PA and two daughters, Susan N. Johnstone and husband George Johnstone of Mt. Laurel, NJ, and Karen N. Ceh, and husband William Ceh of Allentown, PA, and nine grandchildren.

 

Services will be held at 12:00pm on Thursday, March 22nd at Good Shepherd United Church of Christ, 170 Tuckerton Road, Muhlenberg Township. A visitation will be held from 11:00am to 12:00pm in the church.  Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery.

 

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to “Leader Dogs for the Blind” through the Muhlenberg Lions Club, 3507 Chestnut Street, Reading PA 19605, or to Good Shepherd United Church of Christ “Building Fund”, 170 Tuckerton Road, Reading, PA 19605.
