Anna May (Dunn) Hoppes, 88, formerly of Oley Township, died of natural causes on Friday, October 12, 2018, at Keystone Villa at Douglassville, Amity Township, where she had resided since 2015.
Born in Exeter Township on February 14, 1930, she was the youngest of six children born to William F. Dunn and Eva A. (Hafer) Dunn. In 1948, she graduated from Mount Penn High School, where she was a starting guard on a Berks County championship basketball team.
After graduation, she worked for almost a decade as an administrative assistant to the Berks County Superintendent of Schools, Newton W. Geiss.
In 1950, she married Harold Y. Hoppes, of Oley Township, her husband until his death in 2014. Together, they built a ranch house perched on a knoll overlooking the Bieber Creek in the Oley Valley, and raised three children, all surviving: Sharon L. Hoppes, of Hagerstown, Md., Dr. Kimberly A. Hoppes (and her husband, Dr. John E. Jannes), of New York City; and Andrew P. Hoppes (and his wife, Holly J. Herman) of Wayne, Chester County. Also surviving are three grandsons: Ethan M. Jannes, Peter D. Jannes and Adam R. Hoppes.
She was a leader of Camp Fire, at local, district and county levels. In 1977, she was elected president of the Reading-Berks County Council of Camp Fire Girls, after having held numerous prior leadership positions.
In 1973, she received the William N. Kline award from the United Way of Berks County for outstanding volunteer work in the social services field, including serving as chair of the Perkiomen District's Leader's Assn of the Camp Fire Girls. In 1976, she received the Luther Halsey Gulick Award, Camp Fire's highest honor.
She was a dedicated member of Friedens Evangelical Lutheran Church, Oley, where she was a Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher and Church Council Member.
In 2000, she received the Lamb Award, a national award given to Lutherans for service to youth. In 2007, she received the Bishop Touhsaent Award for significant social ministry from the church, and in 2016, the Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America at Friedens Lutheran presented her its ELCA Bold Woman Award.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a viewing from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, October 19, 2018, at Friedens Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1076 Memorial Highway, Oley. On Saturday, October 20, 2018, there will be a one-hour viewing, followed by a service beginning at noon. Burial will follow at Friedens Cemetery, Oley. A luncheon at the church will follow.
