Bernice Anna (Mertz) Sayer, 84, of Oley Township, died January 2, 2018 at Berkshire Commons, where she was a residence for one month.

She was the wife of Carl William Sayer, to whom she was married August 16, 1980.

Born October 6, 1933 in Kutztown, she was a daughter of the late Raymond K. and Mabel Irene (Wartzenluft) Mertz.

Bernice was employed as a sewing machine operator with Wenton Shoe Factory, Kutztown for over 10 years and retired from Deka after 23 years.  After retirement, she was employed with Oley Valley School District as a kitchen worker in the cafeteria and as a custodian at the Oley Fair Center.

She loved country and western music and television shows, she enjoyed crocheting, loved animals and baking and watching the Phillies.

Bernice was a member of Oley Fire Company.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are her four children: Carol A., wife of David W. Murphy of Oley; Donna L., wife of Kim H. Lorah of Exeter Township; Barry R. Wagaman, fiancé of Melissa M. Aiman of Temple and Tina T., wife of Brett A. Stephens of Boyertown.

Other survivors include her brother, Kenneth Mertz of Fleetwood and her seven grandchildren: Justin, Kimberly, Joshua, Christopher, Jason, Kristine and Cori and six great grandchildren.

Bernice was predeceased by her three siblings: Ernest Mertz, Laila Sousley and Joann Albright.

A memorial service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in Stitzel Family Funeral Homes & Crematory, Inc., 423 Main Street, Oley.  A visitation will be held from 10-11 a.m. in the funeral home.
