Ann Helen Shapley (“Annie”), 79, of Oley, PA, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 18, 2026 at her residence. At her bedside were her son, her daughter-in-law, her dearest friend, and her cherished dog, Roxy.
In her final days Annie felt blessed as she received many visits, both in-person and virtually, with beloved family and friends near and far.
Born June 27, 1946, in Philadelphia, PA, Annie was the daughter of the late Frederick Shapley and Anna (Cullen) Shapley. She was the youngest of five siblings. Growing up in Philadelphia, she attended Franklin High School and obtained her GED at the Lutheran Settlement House. With the exception of two years spent in Oregon with her son and his family, Annie spent most of her life in Philadelphia, before moving to Oley in 2021, to live with her best friend of 46-years.
Annie started her working career making sandwiches with her family and friends for the Shapley Brothers lunch truck business. After the company closed, she went to school to become a nurse's aide and spent some of her best years working alongside her sister Connie at Lawndale Community Hospital in Northeast Philadelphia. Annie loved her work and would always make a point of spending a little extra time with patients who were alone and without visitors.
In her free time Annie enjoyed floral arranging, crocheting, gardening, and adoring her beloved doggies. She also claimed to have never met a piece of candy she didn’t like. Annie had a love of (and a talent for) decorating for the seasons, and would adorn her home with her beautiful creations. In her final days, she was mentally decorating the mantel piece in the home she shared with her dearest friend Donna and Donna’s nephew, Michael.
Surviving Annie is her son, Lee Shapley, husband of Janine (Twining) of Beacon, NY, and her grandson, Jack Twining.
Annie also leaves behind her oldest brother, Don Shapley, numerous beloved nieces and nephews, and grand nieces and nephews, and her dearest friend, who has always been like family, Donna Sherwood. She was predeceased by her parents, and four siblings: George Shapley; Fred Shapley; Constance Malpass; and Lucy Gallagher.
A private Celebration of Life is being planned for Annie at a later date.
