Bernard Francis Hughes, 81, of Lower Alsace, PA, passed away Saturday, July, 12, 2025, at Penn State Health St. Joseph Medical Center.
He was the widower of Linda (Springer) Hughes who passed away January 20, 2025.
Born January 4, 1944, he was the son of the late Clarence Hughes and Catherine Ehrig.
Bernard was a 1962 graduate of Oley Valley High School. After graduating he attended Vo-tech where he became a certified mechanic. He went on to own and operate H&S automotive on Perkiomen Ave in Mt Penn for 25 years. While growing up he worked on his family farm.
In Bernard's free time he loved spending time outdoors. He could often be found mowing the lawn and tending to his garden. He was always up for a game of cards, especially Canasta, Hawsy and Oh Heck. Bernard was a candy connoisseur and especially liked Hershey chocolate bars and LifeSaver mints.
Surviving are three children: Kevin Hughes, husband of Cathy (Blessing) of Louisiana; Adam Hughes, husband of Rebecca (Shugar) of Sinking Spring; Dan Hughes, husband of Jenna (Kaufman) of Lower Alsace Township.
Also surviving are four grandchildren: Kailey Hughes; Kaiden Hughes; Dakota Hughes; and Violet Hughes.
One brother is surviving, Mike Hughes, husband of Lisa (Burkert), and two sisters are surviving, Kay (Hughes) Medlar, widow of James, and Jean (Hughes) Fick, widow of Arthur.
Bernard was predeceased in death by his sister, Cindy (Hughes) Fick, widow of Leroy.
A service will be held Tuesday, July 22, 2025 at 11 am at the Stitzel Family Funeral Home & Crematory Inc., Oley. A visitation will take place from 10 am to 11 am at the same location. Burial will take place at Berks County Memorial Garden following the service.
