Paul David McMullen, M.D., FAAEM, 62, of Muhlenberg Township, formerly of Weedsport, Fishtown, Glenside, and Bala Cynwyd died unexpectedly June 2, 2024 while visiting Lower Manhattan, New York.
Born June 2, 1962 in Auburn, New York, he was a son of the late John Wilson McMullen, Sr., and Pauline Ann (Hudson) McMullen.
He was the husband of Cynthia (Canning) McMullen, whom he married June 18, 2003.
Paul graduated from Weedsport High School (N.Y.) in 1980 where he had a record setting swimming career; Syracuse University (N.Y.) in 1984; Stony Brook University (N.Y.) where he earned his Doctor of Medicine in 1990.
He was a former member of the Church of the Redeemer in Bryn Mawr.
Paul loved being an Emergency Room Physician. He worked at several hospitals during his career including Temple University Hospital; Roxborough Memorial Hospital; Capital Health Hospital (N.J); Jefferson Abington Hospital (P.A.); Easton Hospital (P.A.); Penn State Hershey (P.A.); and last working on May 31st, 2024 with Penn State St. Josephs, Reading, PA.
Some of Paul’s certifications and professional societies include American Board of Internal Medicine (1993); American Board of Emergency Medicine (1998); American Academy of Emergency Medicine; American Medical Association; American College of Physicians; FAAEM (Fellow of the American Academy of Emergency Medicine); Base Medical Command Physician; Advanced Cardiac Life Support Instructor; Advanced Trauma Life Support; and Pediatric Advanced Life Support.
Paul loved traveling, especially on Disney Cruises, having gone on 21 Disney cruises; earning him a coveted Platinum Castaway Club Membership. He was a huge Winnie the Pooh fan and enjoyed home remodeling; swimming; reading; Playmobil; crafts; and coloring. He was also invested in the lives of the rescue animals at Clearwater Marine Aquarium.
He was obsessed with decorating for the Holidays and was considered the Clark Griswald of Christmas amongst his family. Annually he risked his life climbing on the roof and placing his Christmas lights at the highest point.
Paul was the proud father of four daughters: Morgan V. (McMullen), wife of Michael Olson of Brooklyn, New York; Galen R. McMullen of Philadelphia, PA; Rebecca K. Clark of West Palm Beach, Florida; and Gwendolyn R. McMullen of Miami, Florida.
He is also survived by three older siblings: John, husband of Sandy McMullen; Penni (McMullen), wife of Ronald Dennis; and Frank McMullen.
There are also several nieces and nephews: Jason McMullen; Josh (McMullen) Henning; Justin McMullen; Michelle (McMullen) Ball; Laura (Dennis) Fitzgerald; Michael Dennis; Jeff Dennis; Gabrielle MacQuaid; and Shane MacQuaid.
Other survivors include his sister-in-law, Diane, wife of David MacQuaid; mother-in-law, Kathleen, widow of John Canning; and a dog, “Duke”.
Paul was predeceased by his cat, “Shadow”.
A viewing will be held Saturday, June 8th from 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM in Stitzel Family Funeral Homes & Crematory, Inc., 3300 Kutztown Road, Laureldale, PA 19605, with services beginning at 11:00 AM.
