Edward Alvin Greth, 89, of Leesport, passed away peacefully September 16, 2021 at Maple Farm in Akron, PA. He was the husband of the late Shirley Marie (Tansky) Greth, who passed away on June 14, 2004.
Born July 30, 1932 in Reading, PA, he was the son of the late Edward Charles and Ethel Mae (Becker) Greth.
Edward proudly served in the Naval Reserves and the United States Air Force. He served in Japan as a medic in the Korean War conflict.
He was a 1951 graduate of Reading High School and was employed by the City of Reading for 23 years performing parking meter maintenance and collection. He drove bus for the Reading Bus Company and drove truck for Hollywood Cleaners before working for the City.
Edward was a life member of the Pike Township Sportsmen's Association. He was an active member of the East End Athletic Club and represented Santa Claus for many years at the club. Ed enjoyed working at the Reading Fairgrounds during the good old Reading Fair and car races. He also volunteered for the democratic committee at many functions.
Surviving are his children: Edward Charles, husband of the late Judy Greth of Gilbertsville and Patricia Colleen, wife of John Beisswanger of West Lawn; Granddaughters: Shannon, wife of Brian Levesque of Green Lane, PA and Jessica Koestel, wife of Jonathan Koestel of Reading. Also surviving are his great grandchildren: Alex Levesque and Avery and Chase Koestel.
In addition are his siblings: Douglas C., husband of Dolores (Gehris) Greth of Malta, NY and Carmella Louise, wife of Frank Reitnauer of Laurel, DE.
A funeral service will be held Friday, September 24, 2021 at 12PM at the Stitzel Family Funeral Home, 3300 Kutztown Road, Laureldale. A viewing will be held Thursday evening from 6-8PM and again from 11-12PM on Friday. Entombment will follow in Gethsemane cemetery.
