Homer Carley Obituary

Homer A. Carley, 94, of Shillington, passed away June 6, 2022 in the Mifflin Center surrounded by his loving family.

He was the husband of the late Mary Jane (Marbarger) Carley, who passed away in 2020.  They enjoyed 71 years of marriage.

Born July 28, 1927 in Laureldale, PA, he was the son of the late John A. and Charlotte I. (Levan) Carley, Sr.

Homer was a 1945 graduate of Muhlenberg High School and attended Albright College. He was a member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, Shillington. 

He was employed as a cable splicer for Bell Telephone Company.

Homer proudly served his country in the United States Army. 

He was a four sport athlete at Muhlenberg High School (soccer, basketball, baseball, track). He was a member of the Berks County Basketball Championship team in 1945 (Captain 11 & 12th Grade). Homer was the outstanding Muhlenberg High School Athlete in 1945. He was a part of the Baseball & Soccer Division Champs 1945.  Homer was inducted into the Muhlenberg School District Hall of Fame (November 2001). 

Homer was also a member of the Berks Basketball Recreation League and the past President of The Reading-Berks Basketball Old-Timers for many years.
He enjoyed playing Santa Claus for the residents of Berks Heim and his grandchildren for many years.

Surviving are his children: Kathleen A., wife of J. Michael Gyomber of Wyomissing; 

Dennis H., husband of Pamela (Zellers) Carley of Mohnton.

Grandchildren: Steven M., husband of Laura (VanDerKnokke) Gyomber of Wyomissing, Matthew S., husband of Nicole (Stoyer) Carley of Mohnton and Eric J., husband of Meghan (Snavely) Carley of Brecknock Township. 

Great Grandchildren: Caden Carley, Kaylee Carley, Aubrey Carley, Braeden Carley and Nicolas Gyomber. 

He was preceded in death by his siblings: Dorothea Hughes, John A. Carley, Jr., Audrey I. Faller and Joyce E. Herbein.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, June 10th at 11am at Laureldale Cemetery, 4631 Pottsville Pike, Reading, PA 19605. A viewing will be held from 10-11 at the Chapel at Laureldale Cemetery.  

Burial will follow at Laureldale Cemetery.
