Sandra & Garry Street Obituary

Sandra Helen “Sandie” (Helbert) Street, 78, of Laureldale, died October 3, 2020 at Reading Hospital.  Two days later, in the early morning hours of October 5, 2020, her husband, Garry Earl Street, 80, succumbed to a broken heart.  They shared 58 years of marriage.
Sandie was born January 15, 1942, in Laureldale, and was the daughter of the late Irvin Franklin and Ferne Alice (Christ) Helbert.  She was a 1959 graduate of Muhlenberg High School.  She was employed as a secretary at Savor Street Foods, formally Bachman's, since 1969.  She was last working in March.
Garry was born August 17, 1940, in Reading, and was the son of the late Albert Herbert Street and Kathryn Hettie (McClatchie) Santoro.  He started his career at Pomeroy’s Department Store as a window dresser in 1957 and then promoted to display manager.  He was then employed with Lauback’s Department Store in Easton.  Subsequently, he worked for Arnold’s Book Bindery, Reading, and Berks Security, his grandfather's business, for several years.  He retired from The Washington Post, as a mailer, in 2000.
Sandie and Garry were both members of Rosedale United Church of Christ, Laureldale, where Sandie taught Sunday School for many years.  Together, as well as with friends, they enjoyed traveling, especially their annual trips, driving across the country, to Las Vegas.  While on their travels, they enjoyed mining for gemstones, minerals, and gold.  Garry used these findings to make jewelry for his family and friends, which was a hobby for many years.   While at home, you could find Sandie and Garry helping each other in the kitchen any time a meal was being prepared.  There were very few things one would do, without the other.  They shared a special kind of love.
Sandie enjoyed reading and doing crossword puzzles.  She was also proud of the Wood Badge Training award she received through Boy Scouts.  Garry was an avid bowler for the Senior League, which won many championships.  He was an avid craftsman, as he enjoyed woodworking, in addition to his jewelry making.
Both Sandie and Garry will be sadly missed by their Chocolate Lab, Nellie.
Garry and Sandie are survived by their three loving children: Michelle K., wife of Russell R. Ludwig, Jr. of Bernville; Deanne F., wife of Michael E. Kalin of Middlebury Center, Tioga County, PA; and Robert I., husband of Lori A. Street of Blandon.
They have six grandchildren: Russell R. Ludwig, III., Jeffery D. Ludwig, Angela M.S. Greth, Derik M. Kalin, Garry A. Street, and Ashley N. Wagner.
In addition, there are 11 great grandchildren: Haylee, Addyson, Alec, Allie, Paislee, Cameron, Kendrick, Leland, MacKenna, Gavin and Faye.
Sandie was preceded in death by her brother, Barry L. Helbert.
One of nine children, Garry is survived by four siblings: Janice Street of Connecticut, Jackie Harris of Illinois, Jimmy Street of California, and Florence Santoro of Arizona.  He was preceded in death by four siblings: Larry Street, Barry Street, H. David Street, and Rocky Santoro.
It was the wish of both Sandie and Garry to not have any funeral services.  The family will celebrate their lives, together, casually.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to: Humane Society of Berks County, 1801 N. 11 th Street, Reading, PA 19604 and/or Shriner’s Children’s Hospital, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607.
