Shirley J. (Machemer) Fox

Shirley J. (Machemer) Fox, 93, formerly of Oley, PA, died January 14, 2018, at the Reading Hospital and Medical Center.  She was the widow of Leonard A. Fox, who died January 24, 2013.  They had been married for 65 years.

Born July 10, 1924, in Reading, she was the daughter of the late Harry L. and Delilah R. (Brown) Machemer.  She graduated from Reading High School in 1942.

She was employed at Albright College for 43 years, retiring as director of personnel in 1988.

When she retired, she volunteered at Oley Elementary School, as a teacher’s aide.

Shirley was a member of Frieden’s United Church of Christ in Oley and had served as a Sunday School teacher there. 

She loved dogs and needlework.  Her knitting and cross stitch pieces won numerous ribbons at the Oley Fair, where she enjoyed volunteering.

She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She is survived by her daughter, Lisbeth A., wife of Gary L. Shugar of Reading.  She has two grandchildren: Daniel, husband of Amanda Shugar and Rebecca, wife of Adam Hughes.

A memorial service will be held January 27, 2018 at 2 p.m. at Frieden’s UCC, 337 Main Street, Oley, PA 19547.  Visitation will be from 1 – 2 pm, followed by the service in the church.  Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.
